Businessperson. Ag producer. Homeowner. Student. Gardener. Senior citizen. No matter who you are, the NDSU Extension Service provides a wealth of information to help you meet the challenges of today's world.

Education Services
Extension information is distributed in whatever method best reaches the people. Thousands of North Dakotans are touched by Extension each year through workshops, demonstrations and individual consultation. Videotapes, publications and computer programs are available through county offices. Staff also uses the mass media and cooperate with other agencies and organizations to serve their communities.

Working Together
The NDSU Extension Service is a partnership between Renville County Commissioners, North Dakota State University and the US Department of Agriculture. Extension professional work in each of North Dakota's counties in youth development, home economics and agriculture. They're also facilitators, planners and teachers to help people in the community. They are NDSU faculty members themselves, and they work with campus specialists for more expertise. In Renville County they cooperate very closely with the North Central Research Extension Center located in Minot, North Dakota.

Seeding Rate Studies At NCREC
In the past it has been a standard recommendation of 1 million live seeds per acre on most small grains. Recent long term studies at the North Central Research Center have increased these recommendations in certain crops. Keep in mind a couple things that can severely affect plant stands. Heavier seedings increase the crop canopy which decreases weed populations, but may also increase leaf diseases. Heavier seedings also tend to promote mostly main stem development. Approximately 80% of the yield comes from the main stems.

In the studies at Minot, the recommended seeding rate for durum in north central and western North Dakota is 1.25-1.5 million seeds per acre. Durum will usually not tiller or "stool out" like HRSW. The recommendation of 1.0 million live seeds per acre is adequate for spring wheat. However, increasing the seeding rate to 1.25 million live sees should be considered. The seeding rate of 1.0 million live seeds per acre is recommended for barley. All these recommendations and charts below are at 100 % germination. If germination is less than 100%, rates should be increased accordingly.
